THE EXHIBITION that ALUMNI WILL SEE as Insiders...
In today’s image-conscious world, photography is a critical and
powerful mediator of a woman's sense of self. This exhibition
features the work of two generations of artists whose portraits,
self-portraits, and narrative photographs have indelibly changed
our understanding of gender and identity over the past 30 years.
This exhibition also focuses on how role models and role-playing
have been central to the art, meaning, and social function of
contemporary photography. Role Models begins with the 1980s,
when American women artists and photographers -- including
Eleanor Antin and Cindy Sherman -- recognized that they
could be both creators and subjects in their own work. This
while others --Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and Mary Ellen Mark --
tried to document the many roles that girls and women "try on"
as they struggle to develop an identity that "fits."
Role Models also considers how, by the late 1990s, a generation
of photographers including Anna Gaskell, Catherine Opie, and
Nikki S. Lee had become role models for a new generation of
energetic women artists...This is a unique show of artists' work.
