Seth Elan ‘79

Meet our Fiction Book Club Chair!

After retiring in 2016 from the federal government, where I served most recently as a Research Analyst at the Library of Congress, I have been working as a freelance translator of business German with a focus on the annual reports, press releases, and employee newsletters of companies. The American Translators Association has certified me for the German-to-English language pair (https://www.atanet.org/onlinedirectories/tsd_view.php?id=10311).

Some of my research at the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress is available online. For example, the Office of Investor Education and Advocacy of the Securities and Exchange Commission features two of my reports about behavioral finance on its website: https://www.sec.gov/investor/tools/behaviorialpatterns.htm

Since 2013 I have served as the second coordinator of the Princeton Club of Washington’s Fiction Book Club. In this capacity, I organize discussions of works of fiction from throughout the world. They can be modern or classic, prominent or obscure. From the group’s inception through July 2020, we have met for in-person or virtual discussions 85 times.

My academic degrees are in German Language and Literature at Princeton University (AB, 1979), International Business at George Washington University (MBA, 1996), and Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University (MS, 1986).
