Welcome to the Princeton Club of Washington - Princeton Club of Washington Pre-Read Event

Princeton Club of Washington Pre-Read Event

Join fellow alumni to discuss the book assigned to all incoming Princeton freshman students.

Read and discuss the short, free-download book assigned to all incoming freshmen, with video of the discussion on campus with the author and students.
The book analyses the influence of digital technology on human attention and democratic political competence.

Our quest to bring the intellectual life of the university to the Princeton Club of Washington continues, with our annual Princeton Pre-Read event. Put down your phone, and join us to discuss how the digital landscape is affecting our ability to shape our identities, lives, and societies.

We will read the short book assigned by Princeton’s President Eisgruber this year to all incoming freshmen; and then gather to watch video of the discussion on campus, interspersed with our own discussion of the book.

The Princeton Pre-Read selection for the Class of 2023 is Stand Out of Our Light: Freedom and Resistance in the Attention Economy, by James Williams, key Google employee turned Oxford Philosophy PhD. It presents a rigorous and original argument about the profound influence of digital technology on human attention and democratic political competence. Dr Williams joined Pres Eisgruber, several faculty members, and the entire Class of 2023 for a spirited discussion of the book.
