Hexagon Call for Writers

Join Hexagon for the December 12th writer's meeting for Hexagon's 2019 show, "Romp in the Swamp"!

Join Hexagon for the December writer's meeting for Hexagon's 2019 show "Romp in the Swamp"! Calling all writers, composers, lyricists and other creative people to help us create satire gold. Hexagon, Best of the Fest winner at the 2017 and 2018 Capital Fringe Festival Audience Awards, and DC’s only all-original political satirical musical comedy revue, is returning with a brand-new show for our 64th year: Romp in the Swamp! At an unspecified time in the future, climate change has (re)turned DC into a literal swamp, and an archaeological dig in this swamp reveals artifacts from DC's past. The archaeologists wonder what those items were for, making way for songs and skits that humorously explore current American politics and culture.
Where: Wednesday, December 12, 7:30-9:30 PM
Where: Woodrow Wilson High School, 3950 Chesapeake St NW, Washington, DC 20016 (maps)
About Hexagon:
In November 1955, a group of young Washingtonians and a former member of the then-all-male Princeton Triangle Club decided to put on a show devoted to “pure fun and nonsense.” They called the new group Hexagon (double the Triangle symbol) to represent the inclusion of women. Led by Charles Ilsley, the group, including iconic satirist Tom Lehrer, wrote songs and parodies for the show, “Meet the Beep.”

After the show, the organizers found themselves with $3,500 in profits ($32,000 in today’s dollars), which they donated to the American Cancer Society. Sixty-four years later, and with more than $3.5 million donated to 40-plus organizations, Hexagon is now America’s oldest continuously running all-original political satirical musical comedy revue. Our regular show, performed in March of every year and put on completely by volunteers, has the second-longest-running Rockettes-style kick line in America.
About the Writers' Meeting:
Come to the meeting if you have something to submit/present. Come if you have an idea to bat around. Come if you are a composer looking for a lyricist. Come if you are a lyricist looking for a composer. Come if you are a sketch writer looking for a writing partner. Or just come because you have nothing else to do and are hoping we'll serve snacks! If you're presenting something, please bring 3 copies of anything you submit. If you'd like to submit something but can't make the meeting, please email it to the director, Nicholas Bashour at nicholasbashour@hexagon.org and to Joe Kaplan, Assistant Director of Creative Materials, at jvkhexagonmaterial@gmail.com.
