About the Play. The Constellation Theatre is putting on the first major D.C. production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle in nearly 30 years. Brecht's epic adventure comes to vibrant life in an immersive new production. Deep in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, a humble kitchen maid named Grusha risks her life to rescue an abandoned baby from civil war. But when the child's aristocratic mother returns to claim him, the entire social order of this corrupt and violent world is put on trial. Featuring a cast of 14 actors playing more than 60 vivid characters and propelled by a rock-inspired original score, The Caucasian Chalk Circle recalls a time much like our own--one of political and social turmoil, but fortified with the promise of compassion and hope.
