Welcome to the May 2010 edition of Tiger E-News, Princeton University's monthly electronic newsletter for alumni. Tiger E-News is a joint publication of the Office of the Alumni Association and the Office of Communications. Kagan '81 nominated to Supreme Court Princeton alumna Elena Kagan '81 has been nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, Kagan would become the fourth female justice. It also would be the first time since 1842 that three of the nine sitting justices attended Princeton. http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S27/34/66S12 Task force issues report on University and the eating clubs In a report issued May 3, the University's Task Force on the Relationships between the University and the Eating Clubs reaffirms the important role the clubs play at Princeton and offers recommendations for enhancing the positive contributions the clubs can make to social life on campus for all undergraduate students. The task force also offers recommendations to address a number of concerns and challenges that are described in the report, and to strengthen relationships between the clubs and the University. http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S27/28/11C13 Andlinger plans blend technical, aesthetic goals for new energy research hub - Architects for Princeton's Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment have completed initial plans for laboratory, classroom and garden spaces that support the center's mission while creating an inviting new presence at the eastern edge of campus. Graduate School applications rise almost 10 percent Princeton's Graduate School admitted 1,183 of the 11,123 applicants who applied for the 2010-11 academic year, with notable interest in new science doctoral degrees and the strength of the school's financial aid program contributing to a 9.7 percent increase in the number of students applying for master's and doctoral programs. http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S27/29/04Q48 Seniors win Dale, Labouisse awards Princeton senior Julie Dickerson will spend the next year using her artistic skills to brighten the surroundings at several hospitals and shelters in New Jersey and New York as the 2010 winner of the Martin Dale Fellowship. Senior Ruth Metzel has been awarded the University's Henry Richardson Labouisse '26 Prize, which will fund her work with a nongovernmental organization to help address environmental issues in Panama. Feldstein was in Africa with the first group of University graduates to participate in the Princeton in Africa program, an experience that has shaped his working life. Careers conference to take place at Reunions Join fellow alumni on Friday, May 28, for the 2010 annual Reunions Career Conference. "Lane Changes: Navigating Career Transitions in an Unpredictable World" will highlight the experiences of Princeton alumni who have successfully changed lanes at different points in their careers. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their own transition plans and experiences through facilitated small group discussion. The Davis Projects for Peace program, which was established in 2007 by Kathryn W. Men's lightweights repeat as Ivy/EARC champ, win 2010 Eastern team title The Princeton men's lightweight crew knew it faced a strong challenge heading into the May 16 EARC Championship regatta, but also knew it could rely on championship experience. On My 16, the Tigers were the fifth seed and not expected to win a medal. Higginson sets ECAC record in steeplechase At the 2010 ECAC & IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Weaver Stadium, Princeton junior Ashley Higginson dispatched an eight-year record in the women's steeplechase with a time of 9:57.50.
